WIFE BY CELEBRATING HER BIRTHDAY WITH BARMY SURPRISES FOR A YEAR

Most people celebrate their wife’s birthday with flowers or chocolates. Not Mark Dilworth. He decided to push out the boat and treat Angela to a whole year of surprises…

Over the last 12 months, care worker and mother of three Angela has discovered a whole new meaning to the word ‘surprise.’

Not only has she found herself whisked on surprise holidays and at the centre of surprise parties, she’s also appeared in the ring with boxing legend Mike Tyson and performed the VIP opening of a local supermarket.
Ironically, Mark came up with the crazy idea to celebrate his wife’s birthday for a year because she wasn’t looking forward to it.

In fact turning 39, was to Angela nothing more than a countdown to 40.
‘I didn’t help matters,’ admits Mark. ‘I remember saying to her, “Watch out, Angie! It’s the big one next!” Looking back, it probably wasn’t the best thing to say.

‘When I asked her what she wanted for her birthday, she just shrugged.  “Surprise me!” she said. My usual gifts are fairly predictable – bunches of flowers, maybe a dress that she’d picked out for herself, one year I even got her a magazine rack from a car boot sale! – so I knew if I was to make her day special, I’d have to come up with a bit more original. The only question was what…and then I had an idea. Angie had asked for a surprise so that’s what she’d get – a whole year of them!’

With their 20 year wedding anniversary coming up, and desperate to show Angela how much he appreciated and loved her, Mark decided to make up for all the rubbish gifts over the years by pulling out all the stops – for a whole year.

He called the present ‘The year of surprises’ and got their three kids – Christopher, 22, Rochelle, 20, and Anthony, 18 – in on the act.

First up was a surprise holiday for Angie’s 39th birthday.

Says Mark: ‘I convinced her she was going to the south coast and she was all geared up for that, but really I’d secretly got her out-of-date passport renewed and booked us on a cruise trip around the Med. A second honeymoon, if you like. Rochelle helped me buy her mum a new wardrobe of summer clothes for the trip and I presented Angela with the tickets the night before we were due to depart in our local pub and everyone started clapping. You should have seen her face!’

‘I was gobsmacked!’ says Angela. ‘I’d been packing my waterproofs for wet week in Weymouth. The trip was wonderful. We’d never been abroad together before. We sailed to Palma, Naples Rome and Monte Carlo. It was so glamorous and from the moment I stepped on board I was treated like a VIP. I told Mark he couldn’t have got me a better birthday present. I loved every minute. I didn’t want it to end.’

Little did Angela know that the trip was just the first of many surprises Mark had up his sleeve…
‘As soon as we got back home, I started planning the next one,’ Mark says. ‘Angela is a huge boxing fan, so when I heard that Mike Tyson was coming to Elland Road I got in touch with his team. They were delighted to help out.’

A few months later, Mark told Angela he was taking her to a posh black tie dinner and to get herself a new dress for the occasion.

‘I went out and bought myself a black and white evening gown and for once I didn’t have to pretend I’d had it at the back of my wardrobe for ages!’ laughs Angela.

When the evening arrived, the couple popped over to their local pub to wait for the taxi.
‘Our lift’s here!’ Mark said as a uniformed chauffeur walked over to lead Angie to the car. And outside, forget a clapped-out mini-cab, a white limo was waiting to whisk them away.

‘I felt like a movie star,’ recalls Angela. ‘When he opened the door I was surprised to see my brother David, 45, inside. “Where are we going?” I asked Mark confused. I shrieked with delight as he handed me tickets for an evening with Mike Tyson – my hero!’

‘She was over the moon,’ laughs Mark. ‘Those tickets were like gold dust.’
And when they arrived at the venue, there was another surprise to come…

‘I’d just finished eating when I heard my name being called over the microphone,’ says Angela. ‘I just sat there in shock until they called it again. I’d only been invited into the ring to help Mike Tyson present the trophies!’
As she hitched up her gown and climbed through the ropes to whistles and cheers from the 1000 strong audience, Mark was delighted he’d done it again.

‘What a fantastic surprise. You’ll never top that!’ Angela said as we drove home afterwards.
But she was wrong. Next on Mark’s list was a surprise party to celebrate Angela’s 40th. Desperate to keep it a secret, Mark got Angela’s friend Lynne in on the act and got her to pretend that they were going out to see Angela’s favourite band for her birthday which was the day after mine. Mark even went to the trouble of printing up a flyer saying where the band were playing so she wouldn’t get suspicious.

‘Mark took me out for a meal for my birthday,’ says Angela. ‘When we got to the restaurant all the kids were there. We had a lovely evening. The next day, we went to meet Lynne at the pub. When we walked in the band was there – along with all my family and friends. It took me a minute to realise what was going on.’
‘Mark had done a fantastic job. Everyone I’d ever known was in that room, over 200 people. How he’d managed to plan it all without letting the cat out of the bag, I’ll never know.’’

Although Angela described the evening as ‘the best surprise yet’, Mark already had his mind on another. He’d heard the pub where he and Angela had first met all those years ago was being demolished and turned into a supermarket.

Says Mark: ‘Angela and I met at the Old Golden Fleece pub 23 years ago and as soon as I heard that it was being converted into a Tesco Express, I knew they’d want a VIP to open it and I had just the person in mind…’
Mark contacted the store and told them all about their meeting, how he wanted her to know how much he appreciated her for running the house and looking after the kids. Tesco agreed she was indeed a VIP and invited Angela to officially open the store. It was due to take place last year before her 40th but planning delays meant it was delayed until this April.

‘They rang me the week before to tell me all about it,’ says Angela. ‘At first I thought it was a practical joke. I couldn’t believe it. “You got me again!” I said to Mark.
Angela went to their local Tesco’s in Batley that weekend to buy a new outfit for her personal appearance.
‘It seemed like a fun thing to do,’ she laughs.

The special day started with a vintage silver Rolls Royce pulling outside their home.
Mark said: ‘I’d told Angela that she was getting picked up by a Tesco delivery van – her face was a picture!
‘When we arrived the store manager and staff were waiting outside for me,’ says Angela. ‘Everyone clapped and cheered when I turned up. I felt like the queen. I felt so special as I cut the ribbon.’
And there was another surprise to come…

‘Mark told me to turn around and look above the door. They’d only kept the pub sign from The Old Golden Fleece and the mosaic that that been around the original door. We both welled up when we saw that. It was a very romantic moment.’

Overwhelmed with everything he’d done for her, Angela told Mark enough was enough. But Mark was finding it hard to give up the boost his new-found planning was giving him…and the pair’s relationship.
‘I’d come up with more and more ideas and just kept telling myself, I’ll  just do this one more thing,’ laughs Mark.

‘Mark even somehow managed to get hold of some tickets to go and see Take That this month,’ says Angela. ‘Rochelle and I started crying with excitement when he handed them over. He was never one for big gestures but he’s become a regular Santa Claus, making all of our dreams come true! I love him to bits.’
‘Before all this I would have said that I wasn’t one for surprises. But I was wrong. I’ve loved every one! Who’d have thought that turning 40 could be so much fun?’
Says Mark: ‘It’s been just as much fun for me, too. I’ve told Angela that’s her lot now but am I being honest this time…? She’ll just have to wait and see!’
